Caroline & Andrew’s adventure
What it’s like to work together.
The Reality of getting married on a main Tourist attraction in the middle of the high season at noon!
There is something wonderfully ambitious about getting married at Hammershus in the middle of July, at exactly noon, under a cloudless sky. The ruins of Northern Europe’s largest medieval castle rise dramatically above the Baltic Sea, surrounded by granite walls, salt air, and endless blue horizons. It is cinematic, windswept, and unforgettable.
But anyone who has photographed — or married — there during high season knows the romance comes with challenges.
Experience.
At noon, the summer light on Bornholm can be merciless.
The sun sits high above the ruins, creating deep shadows under sunglasses, harsh contrast against white wedding dresses, and bright reflections bouncing off the pale stone walls. In a place as exposed as Hammershus, there is nowhere to hide from the light. Every photographer dreams of golden-hour softness; noon at Hammershus offers the exact opposite.
And then there is the crowd.
High season transforms the ruins into one of Bornholm’s busiest destinations. Tourists wander through the ancient passageways, cyclists stop for panoramic photos, and curious visitors inevitably pause when they notice a bride stepping through medieval stone arches.
Yet somehow, that is also part of the magic.
Because despite the practical difficulties — the heat, the wind, the bright sun, the tourists — Hammershus delivers something few wedding venues can: scale. The landscape feels ancient and cinematic. The Baltic Sea becomes a backdrop that no decorator could ever recreate. The harsh midday light, while technically difficult, can also create striking, high-contrast images filled with texture and atmosphere. Sunglasses become less of a compromise and more of a statement. The bright granite, deep blue sea, and sharp shadows give wedding photographs a distinctly editorial feel.
A wedding at Hammershus is not about perfection. It is about embracing the elements: the wind pulling at the dress, the sunlight bleaching the stone walls, and the sense that history itself is standing quietly behind you.
And perhaps that is why couples continue to choose it. Not because it is easy — but because it feels unforgettable the moment you arrive.
